Downtown South Haven Engagement Photos | The Complete Guide

Downtown South Haven is a highly sought-after area for engagement photos among many of my couples. It offers a walkable environment with delightful surprises around every corner, making it a perfect location with plenty of options for capturing beautiful photos. Combining an engagement session here with beach photos is a popular choice, allowing for the best of both worlds. While I won’t be sharing specific locations because I believe any downtown area can be beautiful, rest assured that I’ll take you to various spots based on factors such as lighting, the tourist population, and what complements your outfits. However, I’ve compiled everything else you need to know to ensure a seamless experience. Here are the essential details about South Beach:

Where to Park?

I always suggest meeting at Kilwin’s Ice Cream, conveniently located in the heart of downtown. Some of my favorite photo locations are just around the corner from there. Plus, if you’re meeting me after work and feeling peckish, what better way to start your engagement session than with a sweet treat? Parking can be found throughout downtown, as it’s a relatively small area.

Best Time of Year for Engagement Photos ?

In my opinion, summer is the ideal time for engagement photos. If you prefer slightly cooler weather, consider May or June, as well as September. October and November weather can be unpredictable, so if you choose those months, it’s best to schedule a backup date in case of inclement weather.

Best Time of Day for Photos?

The optimal time of day depends on your preferences and schedules. Here are the start times I recommend based on the time of year. Please note that my suggestions are based on my light and bright photography style, and it’s always a good idea to check with your own photographer for their preferred timings:

  • March – April: 1 pm – 3 pm
  • May – August: 2 pm – 6 pm
  • September: 2 pm – 5 pm
  • October: 2 pm – 4 pm
  • November – December: 1 pm – 3 pm

Where to Change Outfits?

You have a few options for changing outfits. Since most couples choose downtown as a second location alongside the beach session, keep that in mind. Here are the possibilities:

  1. Public Restrooms: There are several throughout the city, with the nicer option along Black River if it’s open or down on South Beach.
  2. Your Car: You can find places in the parking area where you can change or use the backseat for privacy. Both options are popular among my couples.
  3. Pop-up Tent: I have a convenient pop-up tent named Poppy, which is easy to set up, and one person can change at a time. If you’d like to have one for yourself, you can find it directly through this link.

Is This Location Dog Friendly?

Absolutely! Most of South Haven is very dog-friendly, so you can bring your furry friend along for the shoot.
