Blue Dress Barn Wedding

Let me set the scene for you real quick. I drove up to The Blue Dress Barn in Benton Harbor, Michigan just like I do for any wedding day, however, something was different. As I knew I would be greeted with the rustic, vine-covered barn exterior and I’d get a quick glimpse of the ceremony that is flanked by two silos with an archway, again covered elegantly in gorgeous, green vines that would perfectly highlight my couple getting married, I saw a figure standing there. It was Anthony standing there looking at the very place that he and Casey would say “I Do” just a few short hours later. His eyes were hidden by his sunglasses but there was a sense of calm about him.

As I parked and walked up to him to say hello, he told me that he was just envisioning the day and that moment. It was in that moment that I could see how special, how thoughtful, and how excited he was to get married to the love of his life. It is oftentimes that guys will hide their feelings and it’s all let out during a First Look or while they see her walking down the aisle but this was like Anthony was prepping himself for a moment he had dreamt of for a long time.

Likewise, Casey was just as thoughtful and excited and again, READY. She was ready to see him and to spend their wedding day together celebrating their marriage. It was when her dress was on and I had to tell her to wait just a moment so I could make sure Anthony was in place that I saw her eyes slightly fall in having to wait another second or minute.

It was during their first look that I saw watched them each hold their breaths and then I saw Casey’s shoulders feel relief at being with her person and Anthony unable to contain his happiness as tears of joy and laughter erupted from him. This was where the day began to roll into place. It was clear that these two had family and friends was were so enthusiastic to be there, we got to have a lot of fun taking portraits and watching these two say their vows to one another during a wonderful, overcast ceremony that allowed us all to not be too hot during this June day.

As you scroll through here, you’ll notice heart-touching moments like the parent dances, the toasts made by their dads and best people to even having a quick moment where Anthony’s brother who is stationed overseas was able to Facetime in! These moments seemed to simply follow each other and bring along tears of joy, exuberant applause, and again so much laughter. It was the kind of day that just made my wedding photographer’s heart happy.

It’s ok, it’s bittersweet to have watched these two grow together into a beautiful married couple and be sad this amazing day is over. I feel it a lot.
